Democracy Is Destructive Progress
It is time to create a new society, and democracy must make way for it. It would not be the first time that we have brought down the system that dominates everything.
Progress at a High Price
Democratic countries have made incredible progress: human rights, equality, a reduction in everyday violence, material prosperity, social security, access to education, the abolition of slavery, a legal system, higher life expectancy and the healthcare system.
It is precisely because of this progress that we find it so difficult to face the facts. These undeniable successes have come at a high price. It is the democratic societies that invented the neoliberal system and dominated it for the first 100 years. And this system is responsible for the fact that we are seriously jeopardizing the foundations of all life on earth.
The question is: what good is all the progress if we die out? What good is individual freedom if it poisons the earth or enslaves other countries?
Democracy and War
It is also the democratic societies that developed the atomic bomb, and the flagship democracy, the USA, dropped it twice, knowing full well that the war was already over and that the victims would mainly be women, children and old people.
Hitler was elected in 1933 and it was clear what he was up to. His book “Mein Kampf” was a bestseller. It was published in 1925 and sold 240,000 copies by 1933 and 12.4 million copies by 1945. So no one can seriously claim that his intentions were secret. In 1933, the NSDAP received 43.9% of the vote, 17.3 million Germans vote for the abolition of democracy and mass murder.
The USA is by far the country that has fought the most wars in the last 250 years.
It is the Western democratic countries, above all the USA, that have overthrown other democracies (Iran 1953, Guatemala 1954, Congo 1960, Brazil 1965, Indonesia 1965, Greece 1967, Chile 1973, Argentina 1976, Honduras 2009) and this in the name of freedom rights, when in reality it is about mining rights.
The list goes on: Guantanamo, Julian Assange, impoverishment by the World Bank, the wars in Iraq, the war on terror, Edward Snowden, and so on.
But even in Western democratic countries, progress has not brought the happiness that democracy promises. In the USA, 38 million people are poor. Many people in modern democracies are characterized by indifference, insignificance and powerlessness. The depression has reached epic proportions. Half of Americans are fat because they eat poisoned food. Even the extreme drug abuse in Western democracies does not speak for a free and happy society.
Democratic countries, [^1] spend the most on armaments and have the most factories producing death. According to SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute)[^2], the US and the member states of NATO (all democratic countries) are responsible for about 55% to 60% of global arms spending. This calculation does not include NATO's natural allies such as Australia, Japan, Canada and South Korea (also democracies by Western standards).
Democracy and the World
It is the Western democracies that, in the old colonial tradition, invade countries to bring them the *blessing of democracy*, steal their resources or destroy entire countries under the pretext of fighting terrorism.
The US and its allies, all democracies, kill people all over the world, without a court order, without a trial, without a guilty verdict, simply because they say they are unworthy human beings, and when children are killed, they call it collateral damage. And these countries praise themselves as the guardians of freedom and humanity, which can make you quite sick when you know how much suffering they cause.
And last but not least, it is the Western democracies that supply Israel (also a democracy) with the weapons to commit genocide. And in these free Western societies, those who criticise this are defamed as anti-Semites or right-wing radicals.
Added to this is the general trend towards “disinformation”, i.e. anyone in democracies who holds a different opinion to those in power is fought against, imprisoned, loses their job or is simply silenced.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, but it should be clear that democracy is not a blessing for the world. And yet we cling to the idea that it is the best form of government. The argument that it is the lesser of two evils may be true, but that does not change the fact that it is an evil.
It is time to create a new society, and democracy must make way for it. It would not be the first time that we have brought down the system that dominates everything.
