You Become What You Believe - Understanding Our True Self - Part 16
Since ancient times, keepers of life’s deepest secrets have passed down the knowledge: “You become what you believe” to those who walk the path of wisdom. In spiritual traditions, belief is recognized as a powerful force that shapes reality.
Our consciousness, perceptions, choices, and reactions are reflections of what we believe about ourselves and the world. The individual self is shaped by layers of beliefs. What we accept as truth, what we define as limitations, and what we consider possible are all expressions of our beliefs.
We hold two different belief systems: conscious beliefs and unconscious beliefs. Depending on our level of consciousness, we may or may not have achieved a balance between these two life forces.
At lower levels of consciousness, we are controlled by unconscious beliefs without even realizing it. In our society, it’s common to follow superficial, standardized belief patterns with little or no understanding of our deeper beliefs—our true motivations. For example, we may consciously desire happiness and peace, yet experience a reality filled with conflict and suffering. This discrepancy often stems from a deeper belief system, perhaps one rooted in the idea that we must struggle to be happy, or that suffering is an inherent part of human nature.
The gap between reality and our true self is the distance between our separate identities and the experience of oneness. At the lower levels of consciousness, our beliefs and reality often clash. Only at higher levels of consciousness can we close this gap, aligning belief and reality in harmony.
Nondual or Mystical Perspective
From a nondual perspective, belief extends beyond personal identity or the creation of individual reality. Instead, it reflects an interconnected dance between self and cosmos, where belief aligns with cosmic structures and universal patterns. In this view, belief and reality are unified in the field of consciousness. Here, belief is not a fixed attribute but an active, dynamic information pool that gives rise to an energy that flows through reality, connecting the self with the infinite. To believe in something is not merely to accept it mentally; it is to embody it within the totality of existence, allowing the external world to mirror the innerness of life itself.
In this understanding, we no longer cling to the childish wish that life should bend to our desires. Instead, we become, in the truest sense, the entire cosmos, embracing the perfection that is already present within all things.
